Policy & legislation

The maritime security policy of the Commission revolves on three protection levels:

a maritime security aspect: with one Communication published in May 2003 and one Regulation 725/2004 adopted the 31 Mars 2004.

Commission Regulation (EC) No 884/2005 of 10 June 2005 laying down procedures for conducting Commission inspections in the field of maritime security
the port security aspect with the Directive (2005/65) adopted on 26 October 2005 on enhancing port security.
an intermodal security aspect with a proposal for a Regulation (2006/79) presented in 2006 (also valid for aviation security).

Committee: Regulation 725/2004 established a Maritime Security Regulatory Committee (MARSEC Committee) needed to ensure technical adoption of the Annex to Regulation 725/2004 and development of the necessary implementation tools. The Regulatory Committee is chaired by the Commission and consists of experts representing all Member States.
