| Even before September 2001, the Commission
ranked security in maritime transport as a priority.
Initiatives were launched at international
level to establish obligatory security standards. Once adopted, these were
incorporated into EU legislation in order to ensure their respect not only by
ships flying the flag of an EU Member State, but by all those entering Community
waters.
There is active and sustained cooperation
with the United States of America, China Japan, Korea and Russia, soon to be
extended to other partners of the EU.
