6th Framework Programme - FP6 (2002-2006)

About FP6

In the 6th EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6 2002-2006), Directorate-General Energy & Transport is involved in 4 thematic programmes dealing with energy and transport and manages in total 857 M€ over 4 years. The 4 thematic programmes are:

Aeronautics and Space (Priority 4)
Sustainable Energy Systems (Priority 6.1)
Sustainable Surface Transport (Priority 6.1)
Scientific Support to Policies - SSP (Priority 8)

The research topics in these thematic programmes were implemented by means of periodic calls for proposals throughout the 6th Framework Programme (FP6). All calls for proposals of FP6 are closed. Resulting from these calls for proposals, 203 projects have been selected for funding.

In the Aeronautics and Space Programme, Directorate-General Energy & Transport is focussing its research activities on increasing operational capacity and safety of the air transport system. The emphasis is on new generation Air Transport Management (ATM) through 'Co-operative ATM' and airport efficiency and advanced surface movement guidance and control systems through 'Airport of the Future'. The Directorate-General Energy & Transport budget in this area is about 209 M€ (out of 1075M € for the whole Aeronautics and Space programme). The GALILEO related activities are managed by the Galileo Joint Undertaking.

In non-nuclear energy (Sustainable Energy Programme) Directorate-General Energy & Transport is in charge of projects with a focus on renewable energies, energy efficiency and alternative fuels including hydrogen and biofuels. The activities include the new initiative CONCERTO to support integrated strategies for urban energy concepts including renewables and energy efficiency, and the CIVITAS Initiative for clean urban transport strategies which is co-financed together with the transport programme. In non-nuclear energy, Directorate-General Energy & Transport is in charge of 50% of the FP6 Energy Programme’s budget (indicative budget: 446 M€).

The priorities of Directorate-General Energy & Transport in the Sustainable Surface Transport Programme are: Galileo (European Satellite Navigation System), air transport, urban transport (CIVITAS initiative), rail, intermodal transport and logistics, maritime transport, road safety, intelligent transport systems, transport pricing and policy tools. Galileo and the demonstration projects in all areas form directly the basis for new technologies and services to be implemented on the market. Other projects address pre-normative and pre-legislative research in support of transport policy. The FP6 indicative budget of Directorate-General Energy & Transport in the area of transport is about 179 M€, which is about a quarter of the total FP6 budget for the Transport Programme.

Directorate-General Energy & Transport Research under the programme “Scientific Support to Policies - SSP” concentrates on monitoring the implementation of the European transport policies through an efficient, rapid and secure access to reliable and harmonised data and enhanced forecasting tools, and assessing the impacts of individual policies and policy packages in terms of sustainability indicators and harmonised approaches. Another focus of Directorate-General Energy & Transport under this programme is to increase security in mobility systems. The Directorate-General Energy & Transport indicative budget in FP6 in this programme is about 22 M€.
