Clean urban transport: CIVITAS Forum 2008

Bologna will host from 9th-11th November the sixth annual meeting of the cities taking part in Europe's CIVITAS initiative, which aims at developing integrated solutions for sustainable mobility in towns and cities in order to reduce congestion and pollution. In the presence of Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani and Italian Minister of Transport, Altero Matteoli, around 300 participants coming from all around Europe are expected in the Italian city. Practical experience from cities that are Europe-wide leaders in the field of urban mobility will be presented.

L'Observatoire communautaire de la capacité aéroportuaire a été officiellement inauguré le 4 novembre. L'Observatoire est chargé de conseiller la Commission sur le développement de mesures visant à améliorer la capacité du réseau aéroportuaire européen. L'Observatoire constituera aussi un outil essentiel dans la mise en œuvre du plan d'action de la Commission pour la capacité, l'efficacité et la sécurité des aéroports européens.

Security of Gas Supply

Commissioner Piebalgs underlines in Baku the strategic role of Azerbaijan for the realisation of the Southern Gas Corridor

Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs met on 7 November in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, with the Azeri President Ilham Aliyev, as well as Minister of Energy and Industry Natig Aliyev, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov. During his meetings, the Commissioner underlined that Azerbaijan is a strategic partner of the EU and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to close and strengthened EU-Azerbaijani relations and to enhancing its energy partnership. Ahead of the soon to be adopted second Strategic Energy Review, Commissioner Piebalgs discussed the establishment of a Southern Gas Corridor to bring energy resources to Europe as one of the EU's highest energy security priorities.

Commissioner Piebalgs affirms EU's commitment to cooperate with Turkey on the Southern Gas Corridor

On 6 November, Commissioner Piebalgs met with President Gul, Prime Minister Erdogan and the Minister of State Simsek and Minister of Energy Guler, in a high level visit to promote the Southern Gas Corridor, which should bring gas from Central Asia to Europe. Prime Minister Erdogan and Commissioner Piebalgs discussed both Turkey's and the EU's security of supply situation and confirmed that they would work together to improve the security of gas supply for both.

7th EU-China Energy Conference: Strengthening Energy Cooperation

An EU-China conference on energy sources took place on 6 November in Brussels. The conference was opened by Matthias Ruete, Director general for Energy and Transport at the European Commission and Jianlin Cao Chinese Vice Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). The conference is aimed at enhancing cooperation by bringing together high-level European and Chinese representatives from industry and administration.

European Nuclear Energy Forum: Overview

Open debate on opportunities and risks of nuclear energy at the European Nuclear Energy Forum third meeting in Bratislava

The Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and his Czech counterpart Mirek Topolánek opened on 3 November  the third plenary session of the European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) which run until the 4 November in the Slovak capital Bratislava. 200 high-ranking participants from all relevant stakeholders were discussing risks, opportunities and transparency issues of nuclear energy. In his welcome message to the Forum, Commissioner Piebalgs highlighted the importance of investing in low carbon electricity generation. He also stressed that "it is time to respond to the demand from European citizens to develop a common legislative framework for nuclear safety" confirming that the Commission will present in a few weeks a revised proposal for a Directive on nuclear safety.
