State aid: Commission inquires into funding of Danish Railways

 

On 10 September the Commission decided to start an inquiry into two public-service contracts concluded between Denmark's Ministry of Transport and the railway company "Danske Statsbaner" in order to determine whether these contracts amount to state aid. The two contracts cover passenger rail services during 2000-04 and 2005-14. The Commission has a duty to ensure that public-service contracts do not result in overcompensation for the rail company, which would amount to granting it state aid.

The Commission approves aid from France and Italy for the experimental rolling motorway service between Lyon and Turin

On 10 September the European Commission approved an extension of the aid from France and Italy to the experimental rolling motorway service between Aiton and Orbassano which uses the existing line between Lyon and Turin. The service is being operated by AFA – Autoroute Ferroviaire Alpine – from 2007 to 2009

European Commission launches a call for tender to establish a Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) project network in Europe

The European Commission is preparing to establish a network of projects to demonstrate the use of CCS technology in power plants. The Commission launches a call for tender for an external service provider to assist in establishing and running the network. The deadline for submission of tenders is 6 October 2008 and the selection process should be completed by the beginning of 2009.

African Union Commission and European Commission launch an ambitious Africa-EU Energy Partnership

On 8 September high-level discussions on the implementation of the Africa-EU energy partnership took place at the premises of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to establish the Africa-EU Energy Partnership as part of the EU-Africa Joint Strategy. Dr. Elham Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid and Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Energy signed a “Joint statement on the implementation of the first Action Plan of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership” and agreed on actions to be taken in order to speed up the implementation of the Partnership
