Rail transport: new agreement to accelerate deployment of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS)

The European Commission and the rail industry (manufacturers, infrastructure managers and undertakings) signed on 4 July a memorandum of understanding in Rome aimed at accelerating deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERMTS) throughout Europe. Deployment of ERTMS, which is equally suited to high-speed and conventional railway lines, will enable trains to carry a single signalling system on board. This new European concept will reduce operating costs and enhance the efficiency of the system.

The European Commission gave on 2 July its agreement to the financing of the rolling motorway between the Hungarian town of Szeged and Wels in Austria. Between 2008 and 2011, the Hungarian government will part-finance the aid scheme to the tune of 2 980 million forints (€11.92 million

Commission approves French aid scheme boosting inland waterway transport

The European Commission gave on 2 July the green light to a French aid scheme for inland waterway transport. The scheme, which has an overall budget of €16.5 million and will run from 2008 to 2012, is designed to boost inland waterway transport in France by modernising the fleet and promoting the occupation of inland waterway carrier.

GALILEO - European Satellite Navigation System

GALILEO: the procurement for the first constellation of the European navigation satellites will now start

On July 1st, the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) have launched the procurement of the first complete constellation of the European satellite navigation system. A total of 30 dedicated navigation satellites will be put into space, monitored and controlled by a ground-based infrastructure which will be deployed around the world, with the main control centres in Europe.

Europe and US sign aviation agreement to improve safety and cut costs

As of 30 June, aviation relations between the European Community and the United States will be further strengthened through an agreement on aviation safety. Thanks to the mutual recognition of aviation safety certificates, the agreement will result in better harmonised safety systems on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as less cumbersome technical and administrative procedures for the recognition of certificates. It is expected that this will entail further improvement in safety levels and reduce costs by several millions of euros every year for European and US manufacturers alike. These savings should in turn be reflected in fares for passengers.

Commissioner Piebalgs welcomes stronger coope-ration between European Transmission System Operators

CEO's of 36 European Transmission System Operator companies signed on 27 June a declaration of intent, to create a European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) before the end of the year. Energy Commissioner Piebalgs has welcomed this initiative, particularly as it represents a proactive step ahead of the Third Legislative Package on the Internal Electricity Market and reflects the principles set out therein.
