On 13 June, Energy Commissioner Piebalgs attended the celebration of the 35th anniversary of Russian gas supplies to VNG in Leipzig . This is one of the oldest contracts in the EU and underlines the ongoing beneficial symbiosis between the EU and its largest external gas supplier.

Nuclear Safety portal

Nuclear Safety in EU gets strong boost by commitment of nuclear regulators

On 9 June, Nuclear safety regulators from all 27 EU Member States have reached agreement on steps to further strengthen nuclear safety, radioactive waste management and decommissioning arrangements in EU. These areas are under the jurisdiction of individual countries and as part of their continuous self improvement drive they are seeking better ways to learn from each other. At the meeting of the European High Level Group on Nuclear Safety and Waste Management on Friday, 30th May 2008, all delegates (mainly nuclear regulators) have committed themselves for further improvements.

EU-G8 Cooperation in the field of Energy

Commissioner Piebalgs launches the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation

Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, welcomed the Ministerial Declaration signed on 8 June by Energy leaders of the G8 countries, China, India, South Korea and the European Community in view of the establishment of a new multilateral energy initiative: the "International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation", "IPEEC". The signature took place during the G8 Energy Ministerial Meeting attended by Commissioner Piebalgs and organised by Japanese G8 Presidency in the Aomori Prefecture.

IPEEC Declaration adopted by the Energy Ministers

The International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC)

8 June

At the Heiligendamm Summit in June 2007, the G-8 acknowledged an EU proposal for an international initiative on energy efficiency tabled in March 2007, and agreed to explore, together with the International Energy Agency, the most effective means to promote energy efficiency internationally.
