State Aid: The Commission launches a consultation on the draft Guidelines on State aid to railway undertakings

The European Commission published on 21 December the draft Guidelines on State Aid to railway undertakings. This draft is open for consultation by Member States and stakeholders. The Commission aims to adopt these Community Guidelines during the first semester of 2008.

Commission launches formal investigation into new State aid by Greece to Olympic Airways Services and Olympic Airlines

The European Commission decided on 19 December to launch a formal investigation into a number of financial flows and transfers which may amount to State aid to Olympic Airways Services SA and Olympic Airlines SA. The investigated aid payments are believed to have been made to both companies after the period covered by the Commission's negative decision of September 2005 finding that Olympic Airways/Airlines had received illegal and incompatible State aid. The Commission has also enjoined Greece to provide information relevant to its investigation.

Sustainable economics with clean and energy efficient vehicles

The Commission's revised proposal for a Directive on the promotion of clean and energy efficient road transport vehicles introduces sustainable economics into public procurement of vehicles and transport services. Public authorities will use criteria for lifetime costs for energy consumption, CO2 emissions and pollutant emissions when they procure vehicles. A harmonised methodology will be applied to quantify these costs.

Commissioner Piebalgs welcomes adoption of the new Energy Star programme

The Council adopted on 17 December the new Regulation for implementing the EU-US Energy Star programme in the EU. This Regulation requires EU institutions and central Member State government authorities to use energy efficiency criteria no less demanding than those defined in the Energy Star programme when purchasing office equipment. Energy Star is part of the Community strategy to better manage energy demand, contribute to security of energy supply and mitigate climate change.
