The Energy Community organises the first conference to attract investment in the Balkans


TEnergy Ministers from Contracting Parties and Observers to the Treaty Establishing the Energy Community met on 28 September in Athens with investors and International Financing Institutions to find ways to promote investment in energy infrastructures in the region. This marked the first Investment Conference after the entry into force of the Treaty in July 2006. The conference was co-chaired by Mr Andris Piebalgs, EU Energy Commissioner, and by Mr Aleksandar Popović, Minister of Mining and Energy of Republic of Serbia, representing the Presidency of the Energy Community, and hosted by Mr Christos Folias, Minister for Development of the Hellenic Republic. It brought together close to 200 senior level energy policy decision makers and investors.

The Commission pays homage to Loyola de Palacio in a high level conference on Energy in Madrid
 

The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, together with Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and Competition Commissioner Nelly Kroes took part on 1 October in Madrid in a high level conference on Energy held in homage to Loyola de Palacio, former Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Energy and Transport (2000-2005). Under the title "European Energy Challenges" the event has gathered the main leaders of the energy sector across Europe. "At the moment that energy is on the top of the European and global agenda, the vast and ambitious work of Loyola de Palacio shines more than ever", said Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.

Andris Piebalgs visits a large solar plant in Portugal ahead of the Commission's renewables framework directive

Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, has visited on 2 October what is considered to be the world's most powerful solar power plant located in Serpa, southern Portugal. The visit takes place two months before the adoption of Commission's proposals to make possible the Renewables' binding target of 20% of Europe's energy consumption by 2020. "This plant is a good example of the benefits that renewable sources of energy can bring: it creates jobs, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and it reduces our foreign energy dependency", said Commissioner Piebalgs after visiting the plant.

The European Commission was informed on 2 October by Gazprom about a problem of payments for gas delivered to Ukraine and a possibility to reduce gas deliveries to Ukraine if no satisfactory solution was found.
