Trans-European transport network: the Coordinators have sent Vice-President Barrot their second annual reports
 

Under the terms of their mission statements, the European Coordinators[1]mandated by the Commission to facilitate the implementation of certain priority projects of the trans-European transport network have sent Vice-President Barrot their second activity reports. The Coordinators have continued with their tasks and made recommendations to facilitate the implementation of the priority axes for which they are responsible.

List of airlines banned in the EU

Black list of banned airlines: the European Commission adopts new measures

The European Commission today adopted the fifth update of the Community’s list of airlines banned in the European Union; this was first drawn up in March 2006 and last amended in July. The new list replaces the previous one and can already be consulted on the Commission’s website[1]. With this update the Commission is banning in the European Union two new airlines that have been found to be unsafe: Ukrainian Mediterranean Airlines from Ukraine and the Iranian company, Mahan Air.

The European Commission has decided to authorise Czech aid to encourage the development of combined transport through subsidies for the purchase of certain types of wagons.

Commission authorises the extension of aid to combined transport in Austria
 

The European Commission has decided to authorise the extension of the reduced interest loan scheme operated by the Austrian State Fund ERP for combined transport infrastructure and equipment. This decision is aimed at shifting freight transport from the roads on to other, less congested and more environmentally-friendly modes of transport.

State aid: European Commission opens investigation into support to Alghero airport, Italy

The European Commission has decided to launch a formal investigation into support that would have been granted by the Sardinia Region and SOGEAAL SpA, the publicly owned company operating Alghero airport, to various air carriers, and by the Sardinia Region to SOGEAAL SpA. The investigation will allow the Commission to assess whether such support falls afoul of EU State aid rules.

State aid: Commission opens an investigation into the Polish tonnage tax scheme for international maritime transport

The Commission has today decided to open a formal investigation into certain aspects of a measure by the Polish authorities, whereby entities liable for taxes in Poland and engaged in international maritime transportation could change the tax base for their operating profits. Under the notified measure, companies fulfilling certain criteria could opt for a tonnage tax based on the net tonnage of their fleet, in place of the usual corporation tax levied on the profits derived from their maritime activities. The notified scheme was scheduled to run for ten years (from 2007).

European Commission appoints European coordinators for key energy projects
 

Today the European Commission appointed four project coordinators in the field of energy to monitor and facilitate the implementation of several priority projects. The coordinators will be responsible for the high voltage connection France-Spain; the off shore wind connections in the Baltic and North Sea areas; the NABUCCO gas connection; and the power connection between Germany, Poland and Lithuania.

Commissioner Piebalgs recalls European commitment to Nabucco project in a conference held in Budapest
 

Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs recalled today the strong European commitment to the construction of the Nabucco gas pipeline, a project that will supply gas from new suppliers to central Europe. In a speech delivered in a conference held today with the support of the Hungarian government, Commissioner Piebalgs underlined that Nabucco was the only gas project among the four energy priority projects that were to benefit from a co-ordinator. In fact, the newly appointed Nabucco’s co-ordinator, Jozias van Aartsen, was also present in the conference. “This conference organised in Budapest shows that Europe is united in its determination to go ahead with this key project, which will boost our efforts to diversify our supply sources and our supply routes of gas”, said Commissioner Piebalgs.

Third meeting of the Fossil Fuels Forum to discuss the future of power generation from fossil fuels
 

Building on the success of the 2005 and 2006 Fossil Fuels Forum plenary sessions, the third annual meeting will take place on 8 and 9 October in Berlin. The Forum brings together representatives of the European Commission and Member States as well as energy experts, energy companies and other interested stakeholders. This year's topic will revolve aroudn the solutions for fossil fuels with respect to the fight against climate change, security of supply and the external dimension of energy policy.
