Maritime transport: Commission authorises income tax and social insurance refund mechanism for Swedish shipping

The European Commission has on 27 June approved the modified reintroduction of a mechanism in Sweden to refund seafarer's income tax deducted at source as well as employers' social insurance contributions in respect of Swedish tax liable seafarers working on Swedish flagged vessels. The measure is expected to decrease flagging-out of the European maritime fleet, preserving employment and maritime know-how in the Community.

Finland, first Member State to submit National Energy Efficiency Action Plan

Commissioner Piebalgs welcomed Finland's National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP), transmitted on 26 June by Mr Taisto Turunen, Director General of the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry. Finland is thereby the first Member State to present its national strategy on how to achieve the 9% savings target set by the energy end-use efficiency and energy services directive. "With its Energy Efficiency Action Plan Finland has shown its commitment to the cleanest, cheapest and most secure of energies – the energy that we do not use. I expect the rest of the Member States to submit as well their own plans in due time", said Commissioner Piebalgs.

Energy Community’s Ministerial Council Meeting

Energy Ministers from the Parties to the Treaty Establishing the Energy Community met in Bechichi, Montenegro, on 29 June 2007. This was the second meeting since the entering into force of the Treaty. The meeting was co-chaired by EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and the Montenegrin Minister of Economic Development Branimir Gvozdenovic.
