Green Paper on Urban Transport: a new role for urban transport within the European transport policy

The debate on the Green Paper on Urban Transport started on January 31 with a major stakeholders conference in Brussels on Urban Transport: Problems, Solutions and Responsibilities. The conference was organised in the context of the EU Sustainable Energy Week. Around 400 representatives from all sectors that have an interest in urban transport were present. High level representatives from European cities and from the European Institutions presented the expectations of local authorities from the Green Paper and addressed the added value of actions at the European level.

Strengthening transport cooperation with neighbouring countries

The European Commission adopted on January 31 a Communication on "Guidelines for transport in Europe and neighbouring regions". It outlines an ambitious policy in view of creating an effective transport market involving the EU and its neighbours and of spreading the principles of internal market. The Communication identifies the five most important transport axes for international trade between the Union and the neighbouring countries and beyond. It also puts forward a package of measures to shorten journey times along these axes including improvement of infrastructure, streamlining of customs procedures and reducing administrative obstacles.

Blackout of November 2006: important lessons to be drawn

The final report on the incident of 4 November 2006, released today by the Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE), demonstrate that common action at European level is urgent. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs stated, “Europe should draw lessons from this Blackout that left millions of Europeans in various Member States without electricity and develop stronger network security standards".

Commissioner Piebalgs and Minister Enoksen discuss EC-Norway cooperation on carbon capture and storage (CCS)

Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs and the Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Odd Roger Enoksen, met on February 2 to discuss ways to enhance the development of carbon capture and storage technologies, in the framework of the EC-Norway energy cooperation. "If we want to achieve the ambitious environmental goals of the European Energy Policy, the EU will have to develop carbon capture and storage technologies. The extensive experience of Norway in this area could have a very positive impact[1]" stated Commissioner Piebalgs and Minister Enoksen.
