Safety at sea: The European Maritime Safety Agency settles in Lisbon

The installation of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon was celebrated on the 14th of September with the inauguration of its headquarters in the presence of the Prime Minister of Portugal, José Sócrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa, the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and its Vice-President in charge of Transport, Jacques Barrot. EMSA’s mission is to provide technical and scientific advice to the Commission and the Member States in order to ensure a high and uniform level of maritime safety and security, thereby preventing accidents and pollution at sea.

European Commission approves Austrian aid scheme for combined transport

The Commission authorised on the 13th of September an Austrian scheme which intends to encourage the development of combined transport in order to achieve a traffic shift of freight from road to other modes of transport. The aid covers the period 2006-2012 and has a total budget of 15 million EUR. The planned measures will help to achieve the national and EU Kyoto target.

Aid for restructuring SNCM: Commission extends investigation procedure

Following changes made by the French authorities to their original plans for restructuring the ferry operator Société Nationale Corse-Méditerranée (SNCM), the European Commission has decided to extend the formal investigation procedure it initiated on 19 August 2002. The investigation will now also look at new subsidies granted to SNCM under the new plan and determine if they are compatible with European rules on State aid. The subsidies in question were granted prior to the partial sell-off of SNCM to private investors Veolia Transport and Butler Capital Partners.

Commission approves changes to social aid for Martinique
 

The European Commission approved on the 13th of September changes to a social State aid scheme for certain categories of passenger flying from Martinique to metropolitan France. The changes will compensate for the much higher transport costs faced by inhabitants of the island in comparison to the inhabitants of metropolitan France.

EU and the Republic of Korea seal their agreement on GALILEO

During the EU/South Korea summit held in Helsinki on the 11th of September, the two parties formally signed an agreement on co-operation on the European satellite radio navigation programme GALILEO. The agreement provides for numerous areas of co-operation, including cooperative activities in the areas of scientific research and training, industrial cooperation, trade and market development, standards, certification and regulatory measures.

Energy Commissioner Piebalgs presents a car that can drive 2,885 Km on one litre of fuel

Energy Commissioner Piebalgs unveiled on the 14th of September le “Microjoule”, an ethanol-powered vehicle engineered by French students. This prototype was the winner of the European Shell Eco-marathon last May, and is capable of driving around 2,885 km on the equivalent of 1 litre of fuel. The winner of the Shell Eco-Marathon will be unveiled one week before the adoption of the Commission’s Action Plan on Energy Efficiency, which is scheduled for 20 September. “This project illustrates the important role that transport can play in reaching 20% savings of Europe's energy by 2020, the main objective of the action plan”, said Commissioner Piebalgs. The presentation of the “Microjule” will take place at 12h30 in the Piazza of the European Commission’s Berlaymont building.

Green light for Slovak state aid to the Bana Dolina mining company

The European Commission decided on the 13th of September not to raise any objections to the €5 million aid which Slovakia is proposing to grant to the Bana Dolina mining company. The aid was found to be compatible with the proper functioning of the common market.
