The Commission adopted on the 13th of July a Mid-Term Review of the Programme for the Promotion of Short Sea Shipping. The Review evaluates the results of the 14 actions that were introduced in 2003 to enhance the efficiency of Short Sea Shipping in Europe. Short sea shipping has proven to be a transport success story with good growth rates but further growth must be attained.

Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs participated on the 13th of July in the inauguration ceremony of the new Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline at its arrival point in Ceyhan, Turkey. The pipeline will connect the South Caucasus and Central Asia to Turkey, and from there to the Mediterranean shore and the European markets. 24/09/2006

The Commission is holding a public consultation until 26 July on a revision of the new approach which is planned for later this year. The new approach is the procedure whereby the Community legislates on essential requirements of protection and safety of products to be put on the market. It is then left up to industry to choose how to meet these minimum requirements. This is frequently done by means of voluntary standards agreed by the Industry in the sector concerned. DG Enterprise is in charge of this dossier, but there are some energy and transport sectors which already make some use of this approach (e.g. energy efficiency, rail ineroperability, marine equipment, transport of dangerous goods (pressurised vessels)) and it may be possible to extend the revised new approach to other sectors where, for example, safety requirements are important.
