European Commission takes Greece to Court for aid to Olympic [ full text ]

The European Commission decided on the 26th of April to refer Greece to the European Court of Justice for failure to comply with its state aid decision of 14 September 2005. This decision required Greece to quantify and recover all the unlawfully granted aid to Olympic Airways and Olympic Airlines since December 2002. It also asked Greece to immediately suspend all further payments of aid to Olympic Airways and Olympic Airlines, and gave Greece two months to inform the Commission of the steps taken to comply.

Losses to airline companies as a result of 9/11: the Commission accepts part of the measures taken by Greece  [ full text ]

The European Commission decided on the 26th of April to authorise some €2 million of aid granted by Greece to Olympic Airways in compensation for losses resulting from the closure of airspace between 11 and 14 September 2001. However, in line with established practice in respect of other countries the Commission is unable to accept measures taken to compensate for flights not carried out after 14 September 2001. The total amount to be recovered is accordingly about €2.8 million.

Lyon-Turin: the European Commission publishes a report by independent experts [ full text ]

In December 2005, the Commission asked a group of independent experts to evaluate the coherence of the studies carried out by Lyon-Turin Ferroviaire on questions which are at the heart of the concerns of the residents of the Suse Valley. The report’s findings, which has now been sent to the Commission, provide an objective view of the project. The report concludes that the studies carried out by Lyon-Turin Ferroviaire on traffic forecasts and the health and environmental aspects of the project are coherent.

Update on list of air carriers of which all operators are subject to a ban within the Community[ PDF ]

According to information received from the Civil Aviation Department of Thailand, Phuket AIrlines from Thailand, which appears on the EC list of banned air carriers, is currently in the process of splitting up the company into two operating airlines. Once the two new companies have received the operating licence from the Ministry of Transport, Phuket  Airlines will terminate its business completely. One of the new companies will be using B747-200/300 to operate as a charter airline serving the Thailand-Saudi Arabia route; the second airline will be using B737-200 to operate domestically and to nearby, neighbouring countries. This information submitted by the Thai authorities, follows application submitted by two companies - Suvarnabhumi Airlines and Holiday Airlines.

Commissioner Piebalgs stresses the decisive role of the dialogue between energy consumers and producers  [ full text ]

“Co-operation and dialogue is in the common interest of both energy producer and consumer countries” said Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, before leaving to Doha (Qatar) where he participated in the 10th Ministerial Meeting International Energy Forum on 23rd and 24th April. The International Energy Forum is the highest expression of the producer-consumer dialogue, and will bring together Energy Ministers from 70 countries to discuss the prospects and policies of the energy sector at a global level.
