Green light given to rescue of Italian airline Volare Airlines SpA [ full text ]

The Commission authorised on the 8th of March rescue aid for the Italian airline Volare Airlines SpA. This short-term aid is intended to rescue the firm from bankruptcy and allow it to take steps to continue operating. The aid consists of a €25 million guarantee from the Italian Government which the airline will be able to use to obtain credit for that amount from the banks.

Combating urban pollution: German aid programme cleared   [ full text ]

The European Commission has authorised on the 8th of March the extension of Saxony’s programme aimed at reducing urban pollution caused by exhaust gases from buses and by greenhouse gas emissions. This programme, which was launched in 2001, provides financial support for municipalities and businesses responsible for public transport services. It is aimed at reducing emissions through the procurement of new, more environmentally efficient public transport vehicles and better traffic management.

Fuelling our future: the European Commission sets out its vision for an Energy Strategy for Europe   [ full text ]

The basis for a European Energy Policy has been set out by the European Commission in a major new Green Paper, which invites comments on six specific priority areas, containing over 20 concrete suggestions for possible new action. The Green Paper was presented on the 8th of March.

Bartenstein: Europe needs new common energy policy [ full text ]

"Europe needs a new common energy policy", Energy Minister and Council President Martin Bartenstein said at the presentation of the Energy Green Paper by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs on the 8th of March. The Green Paper lays the foundation for this, according to Minister Bartenstein, who said it would provide the basis for a secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply in Europe.
