First anniversary of Air Passenger Rights  [ full text ]

17/02/2006, on the first anniversary of the coming into force of the Regulation on air passenger rights, the European Commission will meet with the National Enforcement Bodies to discuss implementation of this legislation in the Member States. The Regulation offers better protection to air passengers in case of denied boarding, cancellations and long delays.

MEPs back Community Air Traffic Controller Licence  [ full text]

MEPs adopted a second reading report on establishing a Community Air Traffic Controller Licence. Rules on training and licensing of air traffic controllers are to be harmonised. The aims of the proposed directive are to ensure high safety standards and make it easier for air traffic controllers to work outside their home country by simplifying the mutual recognition of national licences.

Competition: energy sector inquiry confirms serious problems and sets out way forward [ full text ]

The European Commission will pursue investigations under EC Treaty anti-trust rules into specific cases of closing off gas and electricity markets by means of long-term downstream contracts and of restricting access to gas and electricity transport infrastructure and storage capacity. The Commission will also consider competition and regulatory remedies to a number of other serious malfunctions in the energy sector that have been confirmed in the preliminary report just published on the findings of the energy sector inquiry launched in June 2005 (see IP/05/716 and IP/05/1421). The report is based on responses from the energy industry and customers. Interested parties can comment on the preliminary report during a two month consultation period.

The European Commission has issued a formal warning against British Nuclear Group Sellafield (BNG SL). Under the Euratom Treaty, the European Commission has the task of ensuring that accounting and administrative procedures are in place to ensure that nuclear materials in possession of companies operating nuclear facilities in the EU are not diverted from the peaceful uses for which they have been declared.

Iranian nuclear dispute: MEPs support UN Security Council involvement [ full text ]

Tension is growing between Iran and the international community over Iran's decision to resume its nuclear research programme, and due to lack of confidence that the nuclear programme is exclusively meant for peaceful purposes. In a resolution adopted on Wednesday, the European Parliament affirms that this issue must be resolved in accordance with the rules of international law, and considers that the involvement of the UN Security Council is a necessary step.

Given the growth in world energy demand and the decline in resources, there is an increasing need to save energy and use it more efficiently. A step in the right direction has been taken when Parliament confirmed an agreement with Council on a directive aiming to encourage Member States to save energy and use it more efficiently when it is sold to private households or the public sector.
