Vice-President Jacques Barrot's speech to the European Parliament [FR]

European social rules for road transport [ full text ]

On 2 February  the European Parliament adopted the agreement on the draft European legislation to improve driving times and rest periods for professional drivers and step up checks on lorries. Drivers will have at least two full days off every two weeks and a longer rest period each day. These new rules clarify the existing rules and bring the practices of the different EU Member States closer together. They also contribute to road safety. “Opening up new markets has to go hand in hand with rules that apply to everyone to ensure fair working conditions. These European social rules create new rights for workers and protect against social dumping”, said Jacques Barrot, Commission Vice-President responsible for transport.

Energy Efficiency in Europe: "Every day we postpone is a mistake" [ full text ]

This was the uncompromising message Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs delivered when the European Parliament's Energy committee met counterparts from national Parliaments on 24-25 January. With Europe facing the effects of climate change, highly priced oil extracted from unstable or potentially hostile states and the ongoing "gas row" between Russia and her neighbours, improving energy efficiency and measures to coordinate Europe's approach to its energy needs have never been more important.

5th Annual ManagEnergy Conference "The Contribution of Local Actors to the EU Action Plan for Energy Efficiency" 7-8th February, Brussels [ Information & Registration ]

The 5th ManagEnergy Annual Conference will take place in the Charlemagne Building, Brussels from 7-8 February 2006. The event will include speakers from the European Commission, including the newly appointed Deputy Director-General in charge of Energy, Fabrizio Barbaso. Local and regional energy actors will also express their opinions. The aim of the event is to encourage the contribution of these local actors to the EU Action Plan for Energy Efficiency, hence the programme has allocated considerable time to debate and feedback from the audience.

If you would like to participate, we encourage registration as soon as possible. If you are unable to join us in Brussels, you can watch the event live on the internet ( and contribute via the online Chat.

A new brochure will be distributed at the conferece, which gives details of 12 examples of good practice from energy agencies across Europe. The examples selected by the European Commission have been chosen for their strong contribution to the promotion of energy efficiency and/or renewable energy use and for their strong possibilities of replication. A copy in PDF format can be downloaded via the link below.
