Air safety in the web site of Energy and Transport DG

Air safety: the lessons from the Onur Air case (FR) [ full text ]

On the initiative of the European Commission, the committee of experts for the air safety of Member States met on 26 May and took a number of decisions to harmonise the European approach in the Onur Air case. Although the Turkish airline has been prohibited from flying in four countries, of which three Member States of the European Union, since mid-May for failures noted in safety requirements, it had nevertheless been able to deviate its flights to neighboring states of the Union. MEP Rothe report on Energy Efficency

Parliament's Committee asks for more flexible approach and tougher objectives to encourage EU Member States to save energy [ full text ]

Parliament's Committee for Industry, Research and Energy wants a more flexible approach and tougher objectives to encourage EU Member States to save energy. This is the thrust of a report by Mechtild ROTHE (PES, DE) on a draft directive aimed at improving the efficiency of energy use at the final stage of consumption. In contrast to the European Commission, whose draft directive proposes that Member States be forced to save an annual amount of energy equal to 1% of energy distributed or sold to final consumers, MEPs in the committee want to set more ambitious binding targets every three years. "Between 2006 and 2015 the overall amount of energy saved will thus be at least 11.5%", says the report. Energy savings should reach 3% over the period 2006-2009, which will "give the Member States the time to establish successful energy efficiency measures", adds the report. MEPs will vote this report on 6 June.
