Outermost regions: European Commission authorises social aid for air passengers [ Full text ]

The Commission has decided on 20 April to authorise two social State aid schemes designed to help certain categories of air passenger living in France’s outermost regions. One is aimed at certain categories of passenger wishing to fly to mainland France from Martinique. The other, known as the “mobility passport” scheme, is geared towards French overseas residents following basic or vocational training in mainland France. The first aid scheme will assist certain categories of air passenger, such as students studying in mainland France and people on low incomes, helping to offset the permanent disadvantage suffered by the inhabitants of Martinique, where air fares are much higher than in mainland France. The aid, totalling around €250 for one return flight per person per year,[1] will be available for scheduled flights between Fort-de-France and mainland France.

Italy: Commission encourages transfer of goods from road to sea [ full text ]

TThe Commission authorised on 20 April  a € 240 Million aid scheme for the next 3 years to encourage the transfer of heavy goods vehicles from road to sea. Subsidies will be granted to road haulage companies which make use of existing or new maritime routes instead of roads.  The notified scheme will be applicable to regular maritime routes between two or more European ports. Transferring road traffic to maritime transport is one of the measures to combat road congestion proposed by Commission’s 2001 White Paper on European Transport Policy. The scheme approved today will cover both accompanied and unaccompanied transport.
