Overview

With their natural resources and strategic geographical position vis-à-vis the European Union, the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia hold important potential as energy transiting and producing countries.

Recognising this potential, the European Union have been participating in the development of the energy sector in these countries since their independence, particularly though the TACIS programme. To take this cooperation further a new initiative was launched in November 2004 that will aim to enhance the energy relations between the respective countries and with the EU.
