The G-8 is a platform for discussion on a broad range of current economic and political international issues. Among its member states are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The hallmark of the G 8 is an annual economic and political summit of the heads of government with participation of high level international officials. The European Union participates at the G8 Summit and it is represented by the President of the European Commission and the leader of the country that holds the Presidency of the European Union. The EU is a full participant in the Summit but it does not chair or host it.
