Midday Express of 2006-05-24
Publication of GALILEO signal interface definition document
A most important step in the Galileo programme has been
achieved: on 23 May 2006, the document describing the GALILEO signal
definition was published on the website of the Galileo Joint Undertaking (www.galileoju.com).
After several years of signal design trade-offs, analyses and technical
qualifications, as well as international negotiations, the best solutions
have been chosen to enable Galileo to provide accurate location
information and state-of-the-art navigation performances to worldwide
users. They also ensure full compatibility with GPS (Global Position
System) signals. This will now enable manufacturers to start designing,
testing, and preparing for the manufacturing of receivers for the
reception of Galileo signals, promote Galileo standardisation, and develop
applications for the European GNSS programme (Global Navigation Satellite
System). The actual manufacturing and selling of Galileo receivers by
manufacturers worldwide will be subject to IPR (intellectual property
rights) licences which will be issued at a later stage by the Galileo
concession holder on behalf of the owner of the system, the GNSS
Supervisory Authority (GSA) in the name of the EU institutions. |

GALILEO:
signature today of the contract for the In-Orbit Validation phase of the
system
After the
successful launch of the GIOVE-A satellite on 28 December 2005 and the
reception of the first "Galileo" signal on 12 January 2006, the programme
is now further progressing with the signature today of the contract for
the development and in-orbit validation of the constellation’s first four
satellites, which are due to be in orbit by 2008. The contract is being
signed by the European Space Agency and Galileo Industries GmbH, and will
pave the way for a successful deployment of Galileo. The value of the
contract amounts to € 950 million which will be paid in equal shares by
the European Space Agency and the European Commission.
The signing
ceremony is taking place at the
Federal Ministry of Transport in Berlin in the presence of the German
Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs Wolfgang
Tiefensee, ESA’s Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain, the European
Commission and several representatives from industries involved in the
project
