In a new Directive proposal, the Commission proposes to use
satellite location technologies as the most appropriate technical solution
for the future interoperability of electronic road tolling systems in
Europe. The aim of the Directive is to avoid having numerous types of
equipment for different national systems installed in vehicles, a
situation which might occur in the coming years in the Alpine region, for
example. The Directive proposes a "European tolling service"
based on the principle "one contract, one equipment" for every
car. GALILEO will be the key success factor for this initiative.

The European Commission organises the 1st Galileo
Conference for an Enlarged Europe on 19, 20 May 2003 in Warsaw,
Poland.
This Conference aims at preparing the ground for the smooth integration of
candidate countries in the GALILEO and EGNOS programmes. It will address
the state-of-play in the satellite navigation sector. Institutional,
industrial and research aspects will be covered.
A parallel meeting between the Commission and candidate countries on the
development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) will be held on the
occasion of this Conference.
