European Commission

Following a mandate from the Council of Ministers of the European Union, the European Commission took the initiative to develop GALILEO, the independent European satellite navigation system.

The Commission has provided an important financial contribution to the definition phase through the 5th Framework Programme for Research and Development. The Trans-European network budget as well as the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Development are contributing to the development phase of the programme.

Within the Commission, the responsibility for the GALILEO file lies with the Directorate General for Energy and Transport. To ensure consistency with other Community policies, and in particular the European space policy, the co-ordination with other relevant Commission services is ensured.
