/European Years European YearsEach year the EU chooses a theme for a campaign aimed at raising public awareness of and drawing national governments' attention to a specific issue. The themes are many and varied yet all of them are accorded due priority by the European institutions and the Member States. 2008 was the European Year of Intercultural dialogue which enjoyed a dazzling success at European, national, regional and local levels. 2009 is a new adventure: the European Year of Creativity and Innovation!
/Education and training Education and trainingActions aimed at supporting education and training for all age groups, through co-operation and work with Member States and the world ; and funding programmes such as the Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-2013 or the Erasmus Mundus.
/Youth YouthEU policies and programmes targeted to young people aim to meet young people’s exchanging expectations while encouraging them to contribute to society. The EU encourages young people to participate actively in society (community life, civil society, political life), supports mobility of young people and promotes the fundamental value of inclusion of all.
/Culture CultureThe European Commission encourages and supports cultural activities within the framework of the Culture Programme which aims to enhance the cultural area shared by Europeans and based on common cultural values, through the development of cultural cooperation between creators, cultural players and cultural institutions. In this respect, the programme supports projects and cultural activities which promote the transnational mobility of people working in the field of culture, encourage the transnational circulation of artistic and cultural works, and enhance the intercultural dialogue.
/Sport SportSport is an essential part of the lives of millions of European citizens. Although it is not a direct EU competence, many EU policies touch – and are touched by – sport. Many of the rules, policies and programmes of the European Union have an impact on the sports world or are of interest to it. Moreover, a number of actions relating to sport are supported through EU programmes in fields, such as education, vocational training, youth, health, social inclusion and regional policy. /Citizenship CitizenshipThe EU's Europe for citizens Programme funds activities which promote Active European Citizenship, build an inclusive European identity and promote common ownership of the European project. It puts citizens in the spotlight and responds to the need to improve citizen's participation in the construction of Europe.Promoting Europe’s common values and history, fostering a sense of ownership of the EU among its citizens, and developing ideas and activities with a European context are the core components of the programme.
/Multilingualism MultilingualismMultilingual citizens are better equiped to take advantage of the educational opportunities created by an integrated Europe. Multilingualism includes actions aimed at promoting language learning and supporting linguistic diversity in the Member States. With a view to encouraging lifelong learning, the European Union promotes citizens’ mobility, runs joint study programmes and establishes networks. Knowledge of languages is essential to the success of these projects.
