A generation of EU programmes for education and training, youth, culture and citizenship in 2007-2013

Programmes

Life long learning programmes

The general objective of the LLP is to contribute through lifelong learning to the development of the Community as an advanced knowledge society, with sustainable economic development, more and better jobs and greater social cohesion, while ensuring good protection of the environment for future generations. In particular, it aims to foster interchange, co-operation and mobility between education and training systems within the Community so that they become a world quality reference.

Comenius

Comenius focuses on the first phase of education, from pre-school and primary to secondary school, and it is addressed to all members of the education community in the broad sense - pupils, teachers, other education staff, but also local authorities, parents' associations, non-government organisations

Erasmus

Erasmus seeks to enhance the quality and reinforce the European dimension of higher education by encouraging transnational cooperation between universities, boosting European mobility and improving the transparency and full academic recognition of studies and qualifications throughout the Union.

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci plays an important role in preparing European citizens for entering the labour market, thereby reducing unemployment. Taking companies' needs into consideration, the programme helps build a skilled European workforce in an increasingly competitive world.

Grundtvig

The aim of the Grundtvig programme is to address the teaching and learning needs of institutions and individuals involved in adult education. In particular, it aims to respond to the challenge of an ageing population and to provide pathways for adults to improve their knowledge and competences.

▫ Transversal programmes

Jean Monnet

The objective of the Jean Monnet Programme is to promote knowledge on European integration on a world-wide level. The Jean Monnet Programme's support measures provide a response to the need for knowledge about European integration and aim to prepare the new generation of European affairs specialists.

External relations programmes

Tempus

The Tempus programme funds cooperation projects in the areas of curriculum development and innovation, teacher training, university management, and structural reforms in higher education. It puts special emphasis on the mobility of academic and administrative staff from higher education institutions, both from the EU and the partner countries.

Erasmus Mundus

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries.

Co-operation Programmes with Industrialised Countries

These programmes aim primarily at promoting understanding between the peoples of the European Union and the respective partner country and at improving the quality of their human resource development. They focus on international curriculum development and student/teacher mobility in the areas of higher education, training and youth and an in-depth dialogue on policy issues. While there are long-term bilateral agreements with the United States and Canada, ad-hoc co-operation activities have been developed so far with Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

Youth in Action

The Youth in Action programme makes an important contribution to the acquisition of competences and is therefore a key instrument in providing young people with opportunities for non-formal and informal learning with a European dimension.

Culture

The general objective of the Culture programme shall be to enhance the cultural area common to Europeans through the development of cultural cooperation between the creators, cultural players and cultural institutions of the countries taking part in the programme, with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship.

 Europe for citizens

The Europe for citizens programme provides the Union with instruments to promote active European citizenship. It puts citizens in the centre and offers them the opportunity to fully assume their responsibility as European citizens.
