eHealth and ICT for Well-being: Research and Innovation

eHealth and ICT for Well-being: Research and Innovation

Health & Well-Being (Unit H.1)
Goal:

Health & care systems which are ICT enabled personalised, preventive, patient-centric, integrated, interoperable and sustainable.  Citizens who are empowered to self-manage their health, diseases and well-being.

Action:

Coordination and promotion of EU research and innovation focusing on ICT based solutions for health and wellbeing. R&I will focus on personalised and interoperable eHealth and well-being solutions and address in-silico medicine, including the virtual physiological human (VPH)/Digital Patient aiming at the personalised, preventive healthcare of the future.

  • Improving understanding of health, ageing & disease
  • Effective health promotion and  disease prevention
  • Improved disease management and citizen-centred care
  • Advancing active and healthy ageing
  • Improving health information, data exploitation and providing an evidence base for health policies and regulation

Situation:
  • Health and social care services are lagging behind other areas in the use of modern technologies. Often the reason for this is that there is not sufficient information available about the efficacy and efficiency of eHealth tools such as telemonitoring and mobile apps to be implemented in health and social care services.
  • eHealth can have its maximum effect only if it is interoperable at every level - local, regional, Member State level and across the borders. Currently, there is a big gap in it.
  • There is a lot of health related data created in different settings – in hospitals, out-patient clinics, social care, through mobile apps etc. However, there is no agreed procedure for analysing the data for scientific and policy related issues.
Mandate:
In DG Connect Unit H.1 participates in the governance of digital service infrastructure with unit H.3 as regards eHealth.
