European Commission, Director General for Climate Action
Jos Delbeke joined the European Commission in 1986, after working temporarily as an economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Thanks to his strong background in economics (holder of a PhD, lecturer at the University of Louvain in Belgium until 1985), he has led a successful career at the European Commission for over 24 years now. He initially focused on market-based instruments, cost-benefit analysis and the new chemicals legislation REACH (1994-1998), before becoming the European Commission's chief negotiator at the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (1999-2003).
As Deputy Director-General of DG Environment (2008-2010), Jos Delbeke participated in several negotiation processes on climate change and energy, be it at interinstitutional (involving the Council and the Parliament of the European Union) or international level. He has been Director General for Climate Action since February 2010.
