His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, UNDP Goodwill Ambassador

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2003 with a particular focus on the UN Millennium Development Goals.
- The Millennium Development Goals can be reached, he said during his visit to Guatemala in 2006.  - They are not too ambitious, and, in fact, we will have to move beyond them, as we cannot accept that any human being is forced to live in extreme poverty.

In addition to his visit to Guatemala, he has also travelled to Burundi, Tanzania, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Guatemala and Mongolia in his capacity as Goodwill Ambassador, and his visits have resulted in national attention to issues relating such as Human Development. In Norway, the Crown Prince has played an important role in increasing awareness to the Millennium Development Goals. The Crown Prince has also provided input to the annual Human Development Report through his participation in the Advisory Panel.

HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was born 20th July, 1973 in Oslo, as the son of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Norway, Harald V and Sonja. HRH has one sister, Her Highness Princess Märtha Louise. The Crown Prince married Miss Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in Oslo Cathedral on 25 August 2001. There are three children in the Crown Prince and Crown Princess’s family: Marius Borg Høiby, Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra and His Highness Prince Sverre Magnus.

The Crown Prince graduated from the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in 1995. In autumn 1996, he moved to the USA to study at the University of California at Berkeley, and received his BA in political science in spring 1999. In 2001 he followed the Foreign Ministry’s trainee programme for diplomats, and completed his education in 2003 at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he was awarded an MA in development studies, specializing in international trade and Africa. The Crown Prince first attended the Council of State on his 18th birthday, 20 July 1991 and first presided over the Council of State as Regent on 22nd May 1992.
