Domestic resource mobilisation - achieving development and the MDGs in a sustainable way

With only five years remaining to reach the Millennium Development Goals, the international community will gather in New York this September 2010 to review progress towards achieving them. Partnership between developing and developed countries has proved to be central to progress towards these objectives, and development aid undoubtedly plays an important role in meeting the Millennium Development Goals. However, there is strong evidence that more can be done to support developing countries to mobilise domestic resources, thus ensuring predictable and sustainable financing for development.

The side event during the High Level Meeting in New York organised by the European Commission and co-chaired by the African Development Bank will be a key opportunity to discuss how developing countries can be supported to unleash the full potential of their domestic resources to achieve the MDGs. Developing countries indeed face considerable difficulties in raising much needed income to finance the public services necessary to achieve these goals.
