Mr. Ranieri Sabatucci, Head of Unit in charge of EU-Pacific relations, DG Development, EC, explains what are the objectives of the upcoming workshop.

For the first time over the past decade, European Commission officials and European researchers, interested in the Pacific, are meeting to discuss ways to cooperate in the region.

The conference on the 22nd October 2010, held in Brussels, will serve as a platform to clarify objectives and interests of mutual cooperation between policy makers and researchers, and to identify possibilities and financial instruments, offered by EU, that could support their research actions in the region.

During the mapping initiative, carried by DG Development in March 2010, over 150 EU researchers responded, which allowed Commission to identify 8 strong networks and research centres across Europe with interest in Pacific.

Over 30 prominent researchers will attend this first networking exercise, which will feed in the development of future relations.
