Albert BINGER

University of the West Indies (UWI), Director of the Centre for Environment and Development
Professor Al Binger is a Jamaican-born scientist and Director for The University of the West Indies Centre for Environment and Development, Mona Campus, Jamaica from 1997 to 2005. Since 2005 Professor Binger has been assisting the development of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) located in Belmopan, Belize.
Prior to joining UWICED, Professor Binger served as Chair, Strategic Planning, Global Environment Division, at the Rockefeller Foundation from 1997 to 1999. His responsibilities as Chair consisted of directing the planning process for the development of the Foundation’s activities in global environment protection and management. In 1990, he joined the Foundation as Senior Programme Officer, Global Environment Division, and was promoted to Director for the Division in 1991. While at the Foundation, he was credited with creating and establishing the Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) programme.
Professor Binger also served as President, Biomass Users Network (BUN), in Montes de Oca, Costa Rica, from 1985 to 1990. While at BUN, he was responsible not only establishing the network, but for planning and directing all activities and fundraising initiatives. Between 1981 to 1984, he worked at the Scientific Research Council in Jamaica, serving as Director, Research and Development.
Professor Binger is a Barbara Ward Fellow, and a holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering, as well as a PhD in Soil Chemistry. He is the author of several publications the most recent being, “Vulnerability in Small Island States (2005),” published by the UNDP. He also serves on a number of boards and committees at the national, regional and international levels, including as a committee member of the Committee for Development Policy of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ESOSOC). He also serves as an adviser to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). Professor Binger’s main expertise and interests include capacity building, climate change and adaptation, and energy.
