As the 3rd Africa-EU Summit is approaching, all eyes are turned towards building on the successes of the first ever Joint EU-Africa Strategy adopted three years ago. This strategy is taking relations between the two continents beyond traditional development to forge a genuine partnership of equals. It goes beyond Institutions and emphasise the people centered partnership.

On 29-30 November 2010 Heads of States and Governments from Europe and Africa will meet in Libya to redefine the relations between the two continents in the framework of a Strategic Partnership to tackle together global challenges: peace and security, climate change, regional integration, private sector development, infrastructure and energy, agriculture and food security, migration.

The second action plan will be adopted and it will build up on the experience gained from the initial phase.

Several side events are organized by stakeholders to provide further impetus to the Joint Africa-EU Strategy as a "people-centred partnership" and inviting to contribute actively to its implementation.

Responding together

Africa has been through major transformations in the last years. International awareness of the situation in Africa is increasing and the continent is living its momentum of change. It is the continent that continues to grow despite the current economic downturn . With its young population, natural resources, biodiversity and economic potential, Africa has opportunities ahead that cannot be ignored.

Europe’s relationship with Africa is not new. Geographical proximity, historic ties, evolving mutual recognition and accountability helps to address common interests, would it be green growth or reforms of institutional and social systems. It is a two-way process between equal partners that share common challenges and have complementary interests.

The dialogue between two partners continues beyond the official Summits. One week after the 3rd Africa EU Summit, the President of the African Union, H.E. Mr Bingu Wa Mutharika and the Deputy Chairperson, Erastus Mwencha, will be taking part in the 5th edition of European Development Days , a flagship event, which brings together all interested development actors for informal sparkling debates, innovative ideas and networking opportunities.
