Speech: a “credible, growing, and open” Europe

Dalia Grybauskaité © EU

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaité says restoring public confidence in the European project depends on granting opportunities for citizens.

Speaking to the European Parliament as Lithuania took over the EU presidency, Ms Grybauskaité said the EU had to refocus its efforts towards citizens.

“In our inevitable preoccupation with the economic challenges that face us, we risk forgetting the fundamentals of what the EU is about,” she said. The main aim, she added, is “to make people’s lives better”.

She outlined priorities for the next six months. These include:

  • building a true economic and monetary union
  • returning growth and fighting unemployment
  • opening up the common services market
  • fighting climate change
  • opening up energy markets and completing European networks
