Vote: Independence movements are internal state issues

Committee of the Regions building © EU

Committee of the Regions says local and regional autonomy and independence movements are internal matters for EU countries.

In an opinion adopted by the EU institution, regional representatives said neither the EU nor the Committee of the Regions are meant to interfere in questions of the internal organisation of an EU country.

In a hypothetical situation in which a region of an EU member country becomes independent, it would have to apply to become a member of the EU like any other country.
