The liberal leader in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, called for far-reaching reforms to European governance.
“There’s a failure in the way we govern Europe – it’s inter-governmental,” said Mr Verhofstadt. “We need a far more integrated Europe.”
He said that it was necessary to reshape Europe to deal with problems not just with the economy, but also in other areas including defence.
Speaking at a high-profile debate in London on the future of the EU, he called for formal talks on revising the EU treaties to start in early 2015, after the European parliamentary elections in 2014.
