Opinion: the rise of populist politics in Europe

Localism, extremism and populism have replaced pan-nationalism, argues an editorial in New Europe.

The online news site argues that the economic crisis has fuelled rising social tensions. And in the current atmosphere of anger and disaffection that has resulted, traditional political parties are losing ground to more extreme organisations.

The 2014 European Parliament will be a decisive moment in how far these parties have taken hold across Europe, it adds.
