The European Parliament has voted to change elections to 22-25 May 2014, a month earlier than planned.

The parliament voted to bring forward the elections at its plenary session on 21 May 2013.

The earlier elections will give new MEPs more time to prepare for the election of the European Commission president in July 2014. MEPs also said the scheduled June dates also coincides with school holidays in many EU countries.

The European Council of Ministers must now make a decision on whether to accept the request.
