Politics: MEPs call for solidarity in economic governance

MEPs meeting at the European Parliament in Strasbourg © EU

The European Parliament called for greater democratic accountability and more action to address social problems as part of reforms to deepen European economic and monetary union.

MEPs passed a resolution on 23 May on European Commission proposals to coordinate national economic reform programmes and enhance competitiveness.

The resolution stresses that full implementation of existing governance rules should take precedence over new proposals and that national parliaments need to be fully involved in economic reforms.

MEPs demanded action to address the negative social effects of reform programmes, in areas such as inclusion, workers' rights and health care.
