Cyprus' energy policy and strategy - EU's energy policy
04.05.2011 Speech (in Greek) by Androulla Kaminara, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, in a discussion organized by the Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK) on May 4, 2011 at AHK central offices in Nicosia.
Energy was at the heart of the European integration since the beginning of the EU project. Recent events, such as the spill at the Gulf of Mexico and accidents at mines all over the world, demonstrate that it remains a crucial topic. Humanity pays a high price for its dependence on conventional forms of energy. That is especially true for Cyprus. According to the latest Commission figures, oil dominates the island's gross consumption dominates by 96%, versus 37% which is the EU average. To tackle the energy challenges we are facing, the Commission presented in November 2010, the "Energy 2020 - A strategy for sustainable, competitive and secure energy," which outlines the areas on which we need to act in the coming decade.
