Launch of MY CY Radio
24.04.2013 Welcome address by Mr Georgios Markopouliotis, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, on Wednesday, 24 April 2013, 15:00 at the EU House, Nicosia
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am very pleased to be here today for the launch of MY CY Radio, Cyprus' first multilingual web radio station.
And I am pleased to be sharing this platform with our friends and collaborators from CCMC, the Cyprus Community Media Centre, who have taken on the implementation of this exciting pilot project.
The community media sector – a distinct media sector alongside state media, public service media and private commercial media – has a growing presence in the European media landscape and its importance has been acknowledged by the European institutions.
Within the sector, radio is the most dynamic medium with over 2,000 community radio stations across Europe.
Cyprus has many communities. Not just the long established, historic communities but also newer communities of people who have come to the island seeking work, education or, indeed, a peaceful retirement. And not just communities defined alongside ethnic, religious and linguistic lines but also communities made up of people of different backgrounds who are bound together by shared concerns or interests.
Yet, despite the presence of all these diverse communities, Cyprus has no community media.
It is against this background that the Representation set in motion the process that has led to the launch today of MY CY Radio. The MY CY Radio project has funding for one year initially and CCMC has been tasked with its implementation following a competitive tender. At the heart of the project is the MY CY Radio Charter – a set of principles and guidelines based on the shared EU values of respect, diversity and active citizenship.
Community organisations and their representatives who are interested in broadcasting on MY CY Radio need to subscribe to this Charter. Once they do so, access to air time, or more precisely, to bandwidth on the Internet, is free of charge and equal for all.
CCMC have already invited a number of community organisations to apply for a programme slot on MY CY Radio and I am delighted to hear that the response has been very encouraging.
To talk about the details of the station's schedule and also to tell you how we got here and what are the plans for future development, I'll hand over now to Larry Fergeson, General Manager of CCMC and also these days Station Manager for MY CY Radio.
