The course of a year towards LGBT equality
05.09.2012 On the occasion of completing one year of action as a registered association in Cyprus, ACCEPT LGBT Cyprus organised a press conference on Wednesday, 5 September 2012, at the EU House in Nicosia.
The press conference included speeches delivered by Mr Georgios Markopouliotis, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, Mr Tasos Georgiou, Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, Mr Aristos Tsiartas on behalf of the Commissioner for Administration, Head of the Authority against Racism and Discrimination, and Mr Yioryis Regginos, ACCEPT's spokesperson.
According to ACCEPT LGBT Cyprus, in a society enlisted as one of the most homophobic countries in Europe, the association is heading towards the realisation of its vision for a society free from every kind of discrimination, and especially when it comes to sexual orientation and gender identity.
At the press conference, Mr Markopouliotis described the course of a successful co-operation between ACCEPT and the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus during the last year. Since September 2011, when ACCEPT became a registered association, a series of events and activities on LGBT issues, including the first ever online campaign in Cyprus, have been organised by the Representation in co-operation with ACCEPT and other authorities.
The European Commission is against any kind of discrimination and violence. Within this framework, the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus will continue to support ACCEPT LGBT Cyprus in its efforts to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation and to sensitise the Cypriot society on LGBT issues.
