Winners of the school competition "Even 1 victim of xenophobia and racism is too many"
20.06.2012 On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, the Representation in Cyprus of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus and the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman) organised an event to award the winners of the school competition "Even 1 victim of xenophobia and racism is too many".
The event took place on Tuesday, 19 June, at the Nicosia Municipality Multifunctional Centre, in an overcrowded hall with students, professors and parents. Representatives of the three organising authorities sent through their speeches the common message that migration and asylum should under no circumstances be addressed in a xenophobic and racist manner. A special video spot by UNHCR Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie, was broadcast on the occasion of the world campaign launched under the title "Dilemmas", aiming at helping the public to empathise with the refugees.
Almost 120 students from 20 schools of secondary education in Cyprus have participated in the competition. The Representative of UNHCR in Cyprus, Mr Nasr Ishak, awarded all participants honorary certificates, signed by the three Heads of the organising authorities.
The prizes of the competition were later announced, three for the poster category (Gymnasiums) and three for the video category (Lyceums and Technical Schools). Representing the Ministry of Education and Culture, Mr Yiannos Ioannou has awarded the school directors or representatives the prizes, which consisted of laptops, video cameras and cameras. The following schools received the prizes:
1st prize: Nicolaideio Gymnasium Paphos
2nd prize: Grammar School Nicosia
3rd prize: School for the Deaf
1st prize: 2nd Technical School Nicosia
2nd prize: Lyceum of Arch. Makarios III Paphos
3rd prize: Lyceum Koutsofta – Panagidi (Paleometoho)
All participating posters were exhibited in the venue and the three winning videos were released. Groups of refugees from Sri Lanka and Congo performed during the event, singing and dancing for peace, solidarity and hope.
The event was organised with the support of the Municipality of Nicosia and the in kind contribution of the Vienna Bakeries.
