Youth on the Move at the 19th International Education Fair in Nicosia

14.02.2012 Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, will participate in the opening of the 19th International Education Fair in Nicosia on Friday February 17th. She will inaugurate the Youth on the Move event, an initiative of the European Union.

In her speech Commissioner Vassiliou will outline the importance of vocational training, studying and working abroad for improving job prospects of young people. She will explain the meaning of European action in this domain and inform about the Commission proposal to substantially increase the funding for studying and learning abroad in the future programme called Erasmus for All.

Commissioner Vassiliou said: "Young people are the future of Europe and we hope to reach many of them at the International Education Fair. We want to interest them in our programmes and raise their awareness of future opportunities."

Following her speech, the Commissioner will visit the "Youth on the Move" stand to discuss the benefits of going abroad to study, train or work. The "Youth on the Move" initiative aims to improve young people’s education and employability by promoting the value of study and work experience abroad, and offering opportunities for young people to do so.

The "Youth on the Move" stand (# 464) provides a unique opportunity to discover and learn more about the possibilities offered to young people who wish to travel while improving their skills. The stand proposes a rich programme of presentations of projects financed by the EU and debates with those who have participated in them, as well as sharing experiences from studying or volunteering abroad. Young people will be able to put their knowledge of the European Union to the test with an entertaining quiz. The full programme is available here.

Cyprus, which is preparing to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2012, will be hosting the International Education Fair for the 19th consecutive year. The fair is the biggest education show in the country with more than 10 000 people from Cyprus, Greece and neighbouring countries coming to visit it every year.
