European Commission in Cyprus supports the 5th Nicosia Youth Days
24.08.2011 For the fifth year running, the Nicosia Youth Days was organised by HAS-DER, a Turkish Cypriot Folk Arts Foundation. Held over eight days, between the 12th and 19th of August, the Youth Days' main aim was to provide a social and cultural forum where young people can come together and interact.
Nicosia without wastes, an environmental action involving the planting of new trees, attracted considerable attention. The workshops were also popular, notably the one on the theme of Volunteering.
In addition to these social awareness actions, there were sports events – a cycling tour of the northern part of the old city of Nicosia as well as street-ball matches and a girls' bi-communal football tournament.
Latin Night on Tuesday, 16th August marked the start of musical activities.
For many people, Cypriot Night on the 17th was the highlight of the Youth Days. Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot folk dancing groups performed together with local music ensembles.
On the closing two nights, Thursday 18th and Friday 19th of August, a succession of popular music groups took to the stage and entertained hundreds of young people till late.
HAS-DER is a non-profit organization that was established in 1977. Since then it has been promoting Cypriot culture and trying to develop it with events such as the Nicosia Youth Days.
This is the first year that the European Commission Representation in Cyprus has actively supported the Youth Days.
