Europe Day celebrated in Cyprus
10.05.2011 The three-day celebration of Europe Day in Cyprus has been successfully concluded. This year's events, which took place in Kato Paphos and the northern part of Nicosia, were dedicated to the European Year of Volunteering 2011. Children's smiles and positive vibes have been transmitted to Cypriots, together with this year's motto: "Volunteer! Make a difference!".
On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 May, the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, the Ministry of Health, the Press and Information Office, the Municipality of Paphos, the Europe Direct Centre in Paphos, the Embassies of the EU Member States, as well as local NGOs organised a series of events at the entrance of the Archaeological Site in Kato Paphos. The events included concerts, choirs, dance performances and activities for children, as well as volunteering action by cleaning the beach and the sea area between the Castle and the Lighthouse. Participants in this action were students, representatives of embassies and local authorities, NGOs and diving schools.
The celebration in Paphos was addressed by the Mayor of Paphos, Mr Savvas Vergas, the Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, Mr Tasos Georgiou, the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, Ms Androulla Kaminara, the Minister of Health, Mr Christos Patsalides, and the Director General of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr George Papageorgiou.
On Monday 9 May, the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus organised, in co-operation with Turkish Cypriot youth organisations (HASDER-Youth Club, YOUNG-FOLKDER, YOUTH CENTER-Islander Youth, CTP, TDP and DP youth branches), a volunteering celebration at the SOS Children Village in the northern part of Cyprus. The event included concerts, traditional Cypriot and modern dances, competitions for children and sports activities. The celebration was addressed by the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, Ms Androulla Kaminara, and the Chairperson of the SOS Village Association, Mr Erdil Nami.
