Events in Nicosia for the 20 Year Anniversary of the Single Market
15.10.2012 The European Commission Representation in Cyprus organised some information events in Nicosia for the 20 year anniversary of the single market.
Last Saturday, a bus covered in the colours and slogans of the single market toured around Nicosia and made stops at places frequented by the youth, with the aim of informing them about the achievements of the single market and the new challenges it faces. The staff of the Representation distributed leaflets to young people throughout the duration of the bus journey. Special stalls had been erected in Universities and further stalls were set up on Makarios Avenue and Eleftheria Square.
Young people made up the majority of the audience at an open discussion which took place last Friday at the Anastasios Leventis Building in Panepistimioupoli. Speakers included the academics Kostas Mavrides (University of Cyprus), Christina Ioannou (University of Nicosia) and Ioannis Violaris (Frederick University). The discussion was moderated by the journalist, Petra Argyrou, and Ms Vasiliki Groumpou addressed the event on behalf of the Representation.
500 million citizens of the EU have access to the single market today. The single market has the biggest GDP in the world. In its 20 years, trade between the Member States has tripled and today amounts to €2.5 trillion. Thanks to the single market, 2.8 million new job posts were created. The contribution of the single market in increasing GDP is estimated at 2.1%.
