It shall implement, together with the other Ministries concerned,
the policies of the State aimed at ensuring the world-wide influence
of the culture and art of France and the French-speaking world .
It shall contribute to France's external cultural policies
and to measures which concern French cultural bodies abroad.
Besides its traditional activities, the Ministry is responsible
preparing and implementing measures which contribute to the
dissemination, use and enrichment of the French language, as well
as the preservation and development of the languages of France;
preparing and implementing the government's media policy;
coordinating construction or renovation work in relation
to the State's major architectural and town planning projects;
devising and implementing measures concerning cultural foundations
The Minister for Culture has authority over:
a number of departments reporting directly to him or his
ten central administrative bodies and the departments with
national competence which report to them;
bodies which are under the authority of another Minister
but with certain powers which are under the authority of the Minister
decentralised departments (Regional Directorates of Cultural
Affairs (DRAC), Departmental Architecture and Heritage Services
(SDAP)). This power is exercised through the prefects of the regional
or local authorities concerned.
He supervises the national public bodies whose tasks place them
within his remit.
Lastly, through its directorates, and more particularly through
their inspectorates, the Ministry exercises scientific, technical
and pedagogical supervision over a number of decentralised institutions
which are within the remit of regional or local authorities.
