Familiarity with the theatre
The Socrates and Leonardo da Vinci programmes can provide funding for training in the theatre sector. The Connect initiative, designed to encourage projects which combine education and culture, has also supported theatre-based projects.
The Council sees the translation of contemporary European drama as an important factor in the dissemination of European cultures (Resolution of May 1993).
Consequently, 11% of the appropriations for the Culture 2000 programme are devoted to funding the translation of literary works, including plays.
New technologies can also raise levels of familiarity with the theatre.
The Theatron project, for example, which is funded by the Union's framework programme for research and technological development, makes use of virtual reality techniques for this purpose.
